Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-SORE-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children’s learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a “prepared environment” in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Now, nearly a century after Maria Montessori’s first casa dei bambini (“children’s house”) in Rome, Montessori education is found all over the world, spanning ages from birth to adolescence.
To answer the question of “What is Montessori Philosophy?” one needs to understand that at the core of this approach is the idea that children need to be allowed to learn on their own while being guided by a teacher. Children are able to learn through exploration and being introduced to and guided through new areas of discovery. Montessori classrooms do not separate children based on age but instead have children of different age groups together so that they can learn from one another. Lessons are taught in small groups, one on one while other children work independently – this is then rotated throughout the day. Children progress at their own pace moving ahead when they are ready as they master new skills.
“It is true, we cannot make a genius. We can only give each individual child the chance to fulfill his/her potential possibilities to become an independent, secure and balanced human being.”
—Dr Maria Montessori
Montessori training refers to teachers that are trained to help, assist and direct the children using the Montessori Method in their classroom. Children have a natural desire to learn and be independent, so a Montessori trained teacher will stimulate the child’s natural curiosity and guide it so that the child learns new things. Children work at their own pace using Montessori materials which all have a specific use or purpose. Montessori training is very hands on for the child, encouraging children to learn through exploration.
The age range that our Wee Care Montessori caters to is the most important period, developmentally in a person’s life; Dr. Montessori described the three to six year old child as having an “absorbent mind”, which translates into a need to process and learn as much new information as possible.
We hire only experienced and qualified teachers that are able to guide your child through his/her preschool years. At Wee Care our curriculum and classrooms are designed to assist children in learning at his/her own pace while developing social skills and self-confidence. Children at our school use special materials which will help develop the concentration, coordination and working habits necessary for more advanced exercises that will be performed at a later stage.
